The Woodley Sports Centre was the idea of an ex RAF Officer who was employed by the local steel works. Originally called the Bredbury steelworks club the sports centre was made up of a bowling green, a cricket pitch, a football pitch and two tennis courts and of course a bar. The buildings come from a original RAF Aerodrome. On the Bowling green the club house was a signal box from Cheadle Railway station and a waiting room from Levenshulme Railways station. The club was the first in the area to obtain floodlights for it’s bowling green which were erected by the gas works.
In 1971 the steel works relinquished control of the club to the members when it became known as Woodley Sports Centre which comprised the bowling and a football club. The Tennis courts became a car park, the Cricket pitch team disbanded and so the Cricket pitch became the main Football pitch. In 1998 old railway buildings were taken down and replaced with a purpose built pavilion on the side of the Bowling green. A donation from Manchester Airport and fundraising by the members made this achievable.
Since 1988 Woodley Sports Bowling club hold the Spring Classic competition, an open competition played over 5 sundays, 128 of the the countries top players competing for a trophy and prize money. At present we have over 100 members and 12 teams competing in Ladies, Mens, Mixed and Vets leagues.
